Siaya Governor James Orengo is preparing to unveil his own political party as differences within the Linda Mwananchi movement expose an increasingly fragmented opposition ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Orengo has been linked to the Liberal Democratic Party as a possible political vehicle for his future ambitions.
The development follows Linda Mwananchi’s decision to endorse Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna as its presidential candidate.
Orengo had previously expressed interest in the movement’s presidential ticket and argued that competing ambitions should be subjected to a credible selection process.
He was absent from the September 26 retreat at which Sifuna was endorsed, although movement officials said he had sent apologies because he was attending to a family matter.
The possibility of Orengo establishing a separate political vehicle adds another party to an increasingly crowded opposition landscape.
Embakasi East MP Babu Owino has unveiled the Mwananchi Party as he prepares to pursue the Nairobi governorship, while Saboti MP Caleb Amisi has established the People’s Renaissance Movement.
Sifuna, meanwhile, is preparing his own political machinery after Linda Mwananchi endorsed him for the presidency.
The proliferation of political parties does not necessarily mean the leaders will ultimately contest separately. Kenyan political parties frequently become vehicles for coalition negotiations ahead of elections.
However, the developments illustrate how quickly opposition politics is changing as leaders prepare for the August 2027 contest.
Orengo is also an experienced opposition politician who previously contested the presidency in 2002 and later became one of Raila Odinga’s prominent political allies.
Attention will now turn to whether he formally launches the new vehicle and how it relates to the wider opposition coalition negotiations already taking shape.
