Sifuna scores major victory in Linda Mwananchi party registration battle

Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna’s political camp has secured a significant victory after the Political Parties Disputes Tribunal overturned a decision blocking reservation of the Linda Mwananchi name.

The tribunal ordered the Registrar of Political Parties to reserve the name Linda Mwananchi Movement within seven days.

The ruling adds another dimension to the rapidly changing opposition landscape ahead of the 2027 General Election.

The tribunal found that the decision to decline reservation of the name lacked legal justification and interfered with the applicants’ right to participate in the formation of a political party.

The victory comes only days after Linda Mwananchi leaders endorsed Sifuna as their preferred presidential candidate.

Following a leadership retreat, the movement announced that Sifuna would lead the unveiling of the political party through which he intends to pursue his presidential ambitions.

However, the wider Linda Mwananchi coalition is simultaneously experiencing significant political realignments.

Embakasi East MP Babu Owino has established the Mwananchi Party and is positioning himself for the Nairobi governor contest, while Saboti MP Caleb Amisi has launched the People’s Renaissance Movement.

Siaya Governor James Orengo has also been linked to plans for a separate political vehicle.

That means Sifuna’s legal victory does not automatically resolve the political question facing the movement: whether Linda Mwananchi can remain a broad opposition platform while its senior personalities establish separate parties and pursue different political ambitions.

Political parties are also racing against electoral deadlines ahead of the August 2027 election.

The tribunal decision nevertheless gives Sifuna’s camp an important legal and branding victory at a time when competition for political space outside the government continues to intensify.
