Nairobi, August 8, 2023 - Azimio leader Raila Odinga has announced significant changes to the composition of the dialogue team, reflecting a strategic move aimed at fostering unity and inclusivity. The reshuffle involves the appointment of Jubilee Secretary-General Jeremiah Kioni to head the Legal and Technical team, with the goal of addressing concerns from a faction of Mt Kenya leaders aligned with the coalition.
Key Appointments for Effective Dialogue
In a statement released on Tuesday, Raila Odinga disclosed that Jeremiah Kioni, alongside former Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka, would be at the forefront of leading discussions on behalf of the opposition coalition. Kalonzo Musyoka was entrusted with leading the dialogue team, while Kioni was given the responsibility of heading the legal and technical team.
Raila expressed optimism in the capabilities of the designated leaders, emphasizing the importance of approaching the talks with an open and courageous mindset to establish common ground and navigate disputes.
Firm Stand on Key Demands
The opposition leader reiterated the coalition's steadfastness in demanding that key issues be addressed during the dialogue. These issues encompass concerns such as the high cost of living, an audit of the 2022 Presidential Election, restructuring of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission, measures to safeguard political parties from interference, and unresolved constitutional matters.
Raila emphasized the need for genuine dialogue, distancing it from surrender or cowardice, and highlighting that engaging in open and honest discussions is an embodiment of strength and practicality.
Transparency and Public Discourse
In alignment with calls for transparency and public engagement, Raila announced that negotiations would be held publicly at Bomas, echoing a demand made earlier by National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichungw’ah.
Raila also committed to refraining from protests during the dialogue's duration, urging both sides, including the Kenya Kwanza faction, to maintain a respectful tone and avoid political vitriol during public rallies.
The opposition's timeline for the dialogue is set at approximately 30 days, emphasizing the urgency and commitment to resolving pressing national issues through meaningful discussions.
As the reshuffled dialogue team takes charge under the leadership of Jeremiah Kioni and Kalonzo Musyoka, all eyes remain on the developments, with the nation's hopes for unity and progress pinned on the outcome of the upcoming discussions.
