Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i has begun a two-day political tour of Migori County, using the visit to deepen grassroots engagement just days after taking up a new leadership role within the Azimio la Umoja coalition.

The Jubilee Party deputy leader arrived in Kuria West on Wednesday, where he is expected to visit Masaba, Kehancha, Ikerege and Isebania before extending the tour to other parts of the county.

While presented as a listening mission, the visit also signals the growing political activity within the opposition as parties reposition themselves ahead of the 2027 General Election.

In a statement marking the start of the tour, Matiang'i said the focus would be on engaging residents directly and understanding the issues affecting their communities.

"Day one of our Migori County tour begins today. Over the course of this journey, I look forward to listening to the people of Migori County, engaging with our communities, and reaffirming our shared commitment to building a united, just, and prosperous Kenya," he said.

He added that rebuilding the country would require determination and collective effort.

"The road to national renewal is not an easy one, but with faith, courage, and the unwavering resolve of our people, we shall liberate our country and restore hope for every Kenyan. Let us move forward together."

Tour Comes After Azimio Appointment

The Migori visit comes less than a week after Matiang'i was formally admitted to Azimio's National Council, the coalition's top decision-making organ.

His appointment, alongside former Meru Governor Peter Munya and Senator Lenny Kivuti, was announced following a meeting of the coalition's leadership as Azimio unveiled plans to reorganise its structures and refresh its political strategy.

Azimio Council Secretary-General Caroli Omondi said the coalition had resolved to restructure its internal organs as part of a broader rebranding exercise.

"The council resolved to reorganise the party structures, the various organs of the party, as well as to move forward with the rebranding of the Azimio Coalition," Omondi said.

He confirmed the admission of the three leaders to the National Council, describing it as part of efforts to strengthen the coalition's leadership.

Growing Political Activity

Matiang'i has increasingly featured in opposition politics in recent months, with supporters viewing him as one of the key figures likely to shape Azimio's strategy ahead of the next election cycle.

His latest county tour mirrors a broader trend among both government and opposition leaders, who have intensified regional visits as political alliances continue to evolve well before the official campaign period.

Although the Jubilee Party has not presented the Migori visit as a campaign event, the timing underscores the heightened political activity taking shape across the country.

For residents, the tour offers an opportunity to raise local concerns directly with one of the opposition's senior figures. For Azimio, it is another step in rebuilding its grassroots presence following its internal reorganisation.
