Linda Mwananchi endorses Edwin Sifuna for 2027 presidency as new party launch nears

Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has been formally endorsed as the Linda Mwananchi movement's presidential candidate for the 2027 General Election, marking a significant step in his transition from a senior ODM politician to a contender seeking his own route to State House.

The movement announced the decision following a leadership retreat, saying it had settled on Sifuna as both its leader and presidential candidate and would unveil the political party through which the campaign will be conducted in early October.

The announcement moves Sifuna's presidential ambitions beyond the declarations he has made at political rallies and towards the task of building the party machinery required to contest a national election.

However, questions remain over the exact political vehicle he will use.

Recent reports have linked Sifuna and Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya with the United Democratic Party, but UDP Acting Deputy Party Leader and Vice Chairman Mohammed Abikar has rejected claims that the two politicians have already taken over the party.

Abikar said any leadership changes would have to follow the party's constitution and established procedures.

That means the identity and legal structure of Sifuna's 2027 political vehicle should remain treated as unconfirmed until the promised launch takes place.

Linda Mwananchi settles on Sifuna

In its statement following the retreat, Linda Mwananchi said it had agreed to move forward around Sifuna's leadership and presidential candidacy.

The decision gives the Nairobi senator a clearer political platform after months of confrontation with the Orange Democratic Movement leadership.

Sifuna was removed as ODM Secretary General earlier this year following an increasingly bitter internal dispute over the direction of the party and its relationship with President William Ruto's administration.

The Office of the Registrar of Political Parties subsequently approved his removal from the Secretary General position in July after reviewing documents submitted by ODM.

Sifuna has since increasingly operated through Linda Mwananchi.

At a July rally in Bungoma, he told supporters that he was looking for another political vehicle to carry his presidential ambitions into the 2027 election.

The latest endorsement therefore represents the next stage of that process.

Rather than simply announcing his intention to run, Sifuna now faces the more difficult organisational task of building or taking control of a registered political party, establishing national structures and determining how Linda Mwananchi relates to the wider opposition.

Orengo absence raises questions

The retreat has also attracted attention because Siaya Governor James Orengo was absent.

Orengo has previously been associated with Linda Mwananchi activities, making his absence notable as the movement made one of its most consequential decisions so far.

People Daily reported that the absence has prompted questions about unity within the movement. However, an absence from one meeting does not by itself establish that Orengo has withdrawn his support or broken with Sifuna.

The position taken by other opposition figures will become clearer as the movement formalises its structures.

Sifuna's next test is organisation

The endorsement gives Sifuna a declared presidential platform but does not resolve the larger strategic questions facing his campaign.

Kenyan presidential candidates require considerably more than personal popularity.

A serious national campaign requires a registered political vehicle, county-level structures, candidates for other elective positions, agents across polling stations, fundraising capacity and alliances capable of building support across regions.

Sifuna must also define how his candidacy fits into a crowded opposition field.

Several political figures are positioning themselves ahead of 2027, while discussions about opposition alliances and possible joint candidates continue.

The Linda Mwananchi decision does not settle those wider negotiations.

It instead establishes Sifuna's current position: his movement wants him on the presidential ballot.

Questions over the new party

Attention will now shift to the promised political party launch.

Reports linking Sifuna with UDP have generated considerable speculation, but senior officials of the party have pushed back against suggestions that a takeover has already been agreed.

Abikar said UDP's constitution must be followed before anyone can assume leadership positions.

There has also been speculation around other existing political vehicles, making the formal unveiling important.

Until then, reports naming a particular party as Sifuna's confirmed vehicle should be treated cautiously.

The party question is more than branding.

Under Kenya's electoral system, the political vehicle determines how candidates are nominated, how party officials exercise authority and how coalitions can be negotiated.

For Sifuna, the early-October unveiling should therefore provide the clearest indication yet of how he intends to convert Linda Mwananchi from a political movement into an electoral organisation.

His endorsement this weekend answers one question: Linda Mwananchi has settled on its presidential candidate.

The next question is what party and national coalition structure Edwin Sifuna intends to use to take that candidacy to the 2027 ballot.
