Trump calls a united Ireland ‘fantastic’ during Dublin visit ahead of Irish Open

12, Sep 2026 / 2 min read / By LiveNow Administrator

During a two‑day visit to Dublin, President Donald Trump told Irish Prime Minister (Taoiseach) Micheál Martin that a united Ireland would be "fantastic" and that the Taoiseach was "the right man" to advance the idea. The remarks were made at Farmleigh House in Phoenix Park, where Trump also said the prospect would eventually happen, adding that the United Kingdom would inevitably have a say in the matter.

Unionist politicians in Northern Ireland responded sharply. DUP leader Gavin Robinson said elections, not foreign commentary, would decide Northern Ireland’s constitutional future, describing the region as part of the UK by "the settled democratic will of its people". Former DUP MP Ian Paisley warned that personal opinions could be "wrong", while Traditional Unionist Voice leader Jim Allister warned that Trump was not the first US president to involve himself in matters that do not concern him, insisting that Northern Ireland is not a pawn in any diplomatic fallout.

Security preparations for the visit were among the most extensive in Irish state history, with the Gardaí deploying road closures, crowd‑control barriers and a heavy police presence in Dublin and the coastal village of Doonbeg, where Trump was slated to attend the Amgen Irish Open. Protesters, including Irish‑born residents and American expatriates, gathered with placards decrying the president’s policies, while the Irish President, Catherine Connolly, met Trump at Áras an Uachtaráin amid calls for her to raise the Gaza issue during their brief encounter.
