Health authorities in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) have reported 10,060 Ebola Cases and 4,887 deaths since the outbreak was identified in mid-May.
The outbreak involves the Bundibugyo virus , astrain for which there is no approved vaccine or specific treatment. The Africa Centers for Disease Control and prevention (Africa CDC) has described it as the -growing Ebola outbreak in history.
Ebola Cases Reported Beyond DR Congo.
The outbreak has also raised concerns beyond DR Congo, with infections reported in Kenya and Nigeria.
Kenya has confirmed nine infections, including two deaths , following the arrival of a patient who travelled from DR Congo through Uganda to Nairobi.
In Nigeria , authorities have confirmed an infection involving a swiss woman married to a swiss diplomat. She became I'll after visiting Uganda prompting investigations into where she contracted the virus . She was later evacuated to Switzerland.
Challenges in Containing the Ebola Outbreak.
Ebola spreads through direct contact with the blood or other bodily fluids of an infected person who has developed symptoms, or through contaminated objects. Early symptoms may be mistaken for Malaria which can delay isolation and treatment.
The absence of an approved vaccine or specific treatment for the Bundibugyo virus presents a significant challenge in responding to the outbreak.
Are researchers Testing Potential Vaccines and Treatments?
Research into possible treatments is ongoing ,with clinical trials examining two antiviral treatment options having started in July.
In addition, two other trials are assessing whether the Ervebo vaccine offers protection against the Bundibugyo virus . At present , this vaccine is approved and recommended only for protection against the Ebola virus .
If you develop symptoms such as fever, sever weakness ,muscle pain , vomiting or diarrhoea and suspect you have been exposed , seek medical attention promptly.
