President Trump made the tariff announcement at the Trump International Golf Links in Doonbeg, County Clare, as he presented the Irish Open trophy to winner Shane Lowry. He said he had been asked to "do a favour" and would therefore eliminate the standard 15% duty that EU‑origin Irish whiskey currently faces when entering the United States, a rate that does not apply to whiskey produced in Northern Ireland or elsewhere in the UK.
The removal of the tariff is expected to erase the advantage enjoyed by some Northern Irish distillerers, who have benefited from a previous cut on UK‑made spirits announced in May. Analysts note that many island‑wide supply chains mean that several Northern Irish brands have been classified as EU producers, limiting their benefit from the earlier relief.
During meetings in Dublin, the president reiterated his view that a united Ireland would be "one of the naturals of all time" and described the idea as a "fairly routine comment". Taoiseach Micheál Martin said the remarks were not surprising and reflected Trump’s personal perspective, while acknowledging that some reactions may be overstated.
The visit also saw significant public dissent: over 10,000 people marched in Dublin against Trump’s presence, and about a hundred demonstrators gathered at Doonbeg, where three women were later charged with trespassing. Local religious leader Rev Steven Foster described Trump as antithetical to his Christian values, while business owners such as Martin Kelly and publican Seoirse Comerford highlighted the economic benefits the golf resort brings to the rural community.
Supporters of the resort pointed to the employment of more than 300 staff and the boost to local commerce, likening the course to a regional version of a major tech employer. The president departed from Shannon Airport on Air Force One after the ceremony, concluding his brief but eventful Irish tour.
