5 things you must know this morning: Kanja faces sentencing, 27 killed in South Africa shootings

1. Police IG Douglas Kanja faces sentencing today over Nairobi roadblocks. Inspector General Douglas Kanja is due before the High Court today for mitigation and sentencing after being found in contempt of court. The case concerns the June 25 barricading of major roads into Nairobi CBD without the timely public advisory required by an earlier court order. Kanja denied wilful disobedience, but the court rejected that defence. 

2. South Africa reels from two mass shootings that killed 27 people in one night. Seventeen people were killed in one shooting and another 10 in a separate attack, according to Reuters reporting. Authorities are investigating links to illegal mining in one case and a business rivalry in the other. Police were still hunting suspects as of the latest reports. 

3. Public hearings on Kenya’s sweeping education reforms enter another phase today. Parliament begins hearings in West Pokot, Marsabit, Mandera and Nandi as MPs collect views on six proposed education laws. The legislation covers basic education, university funding, national assessments, teacher training, qualifications and curriculum development. The exercise runs through October 2. 

4. Nairobi International Trade Fair opens today with more than 500 exhibitors expected. The annual event at Jamhuri Park runs from September 28 to October 4, with agriculture, agribusiness, manufacturing, technology and investment among the main areas of focus. This year's programme is expected to feature technologies including drones, AI-powered precision agriculture and digital farming.

5. Iran tensions push oil higher and US dollar towards a two-month high. Global markets are starting the week under pressure from the continuing US-Iran standoff. Oil prices have rebounded on concerns about supply risks, while the dollar is holding near a two-month high. For Kenya, sustained increases in international oil prices matter because of the country's dependence on imported petroleum and the potential knock-on effect on transport and consumer prices.
