Bien Clarifies Again: 'I’m Not in an Open Marriage

For the umpteenth time, singer Bien-Aime Barasa, of the band Sauti Sol, has publicly denied claims that he and his wife, dance choreographer Chiki Kuruka, are in an open marriage. “I have never said anything like that. I have never said that I am in an open marriage. I am not,” Bien clarified, adding, “Thank you for the wishes, but I am in a very nice, monogamous, happy marriage.”

Speculation about the couple’s relationship style began in June 2021 after Bien’s comments on the reality show Sol Family. On the show, he mentioned a mutual understanding with his wife regarding celebrity crushes. "If I ever meet my celebrity crush and they’re interested, so be it, and vice versa," Bien said, explaining that he’s comfortable with his wife's happiness even if it involves admiration for others. This comment, however, led to widespread assumptions about an open marriage, which Bien now firmly refutes.

“That never happened. The masses just assumed it, and I let them run with it,” he stated, making clear he is committed to his monogamous marriage.

Bien and Chiki married in 2020 in a private ceremony attended by 50 close friends and family, including fellow musicians Nyashinski and Nameless, who performed at the wedding. The intimate event, which cost about Sh300,000, was intentionally low-key, Bien revealed in a podcast with MC Jessy, saying he aimed to avoid the formality and gift-giving of a traditional ceremony. "I didn’t want people bringing me spoons and plates and whatnot. I just wanted people to have a good time,” he shared.
