Kenya's football enters the international break in a state of contradiction - unprecedented money on the table, but no football on the pitch.
A day after FKF President Hussein Mohammed's lengthy press statement on September 21, the 2026/27 FKF SportPesa League remains postponed. The league was meant to kick off on September 19 as the richest in Kenyan history, backed by a historic KSh 1.12 billion SportPesa title sponsorship that guarantees KSh 7.1 million to every club before a ball is kicked, plus a KSh 20 million prize pool and the Azam broadcast deal.
While the league is stalled, the national team offers a welcome distraction. Harambee Stars head coach Benni McCarthy has named his final 24-man squad for the 2027 AFCON qualifiers. As co-hosts alongside Uganda and Tanzania, Kenya are already qualified for Pamoja 2027, but Group D provides competitive preparation.
Kenya host Eritrea at Nyayo National Stadium on Saturday, September 26, before a tough trip to Conakry to face Guinea on October 1. Gor Mahia provide the largest local contingent with five players.
Full Squad: Goalkeepers: Byrne Omondi (Gor Mahia), Faruk Shikhalo (Nairobi United), Brian Bwire (Tusker).
Defenders: Michael Kibagwe, Frank Odhiambo (Gor Mahia), Rooney Onyango (Sogndal), Hannif Wesonga (Jamus), Stanley Wilson (AIK), Abud Omar (Tusker), Amos Wanjala (Valencia), Vincent Harper (Exeter City).
Midfielders: Manzur Okwaro (Stade de Reims), Timothy Ouma (Charlton), Chris Erambo (Tusker), Duke Abuya (Yanga), Marvin Nabwire (Power Dynamos). Forwards: Sharif Musa, Ben Stanley (Gor Mahia), Mohammed Bajaber (Unattached), Job Ochieng (Real Sociedad), Javan Ochieng (Hickory FC), Micah Obiero (Carlisle), Ryan Ogam (RFC Lutich), Captain Michael Olunga (Al-Arabi) who is one goal away from William Ouma's all-time record of 35.
Across Europe, leagues pause with new stories emerging.
In England, Manchester City sit top under new manager Enzo Maresca with a perfect five wins from five after a wild 5-3 win at Sunderland. Arsenal are second on 12 points despite being hammered 3-0 at Brighton on Saturday. Brighton themselves are third on 10. It is early crisis for Tottenham and Fulham.
In Spain, seven games in and Barcelona are flying. The Catalans are unbeaten with seven wins from seven. Real Madrid trail by six points on 15 after losing the Madrid derby at the Wanda Metropolitano.
In Italy, it is a three-way tie. Roma, Inter Milan and Lazio are all locked on 13 points each in what promises to be the most open Scudetto race in years.
In Germany, Borussia Dortmund top the table with a perfect four wins from four. Bayern Munich trail by two points on 10, level with surprise package Freiburg who are also on 10.
In France, AS Monaco lead with 13 points from five matches. Lyon and Paris FC follow closely on 11 points. Champions PSG are down in sixth with eight points despite a 2-1 victory over rivals Marseille.
For England, the break brings a major test for Thomas Tuchel. The Three Lions face a brutal Nations League schedule - Spain (world champions) at Wembley on September 26, Czechia away on September 29, Croatia away on October 3, and Czechia at home on October 6.
Tuchel has already lost five players. Cole Palmer (muscle injury/load management after playing 90 minutes in Chelsea's 3-0 loss at Brentford), Declan Rice (hamstring/back discomfort), Marcus Rashford (hip), Kobbie Mainoo (knock) and Tino Livramento (calf) have all withdrawn. Everton's James Garner and Nottingham Forest's Morgan Gibbs-White have been called up as replacements. The withdrawals have reignited the club-versus-country debate over FIFA's new condensed three-week window.
The emotional headline of the break belongs to Lionel Messi. On August 31, the 39-year-old announced his retirement from international football after 21 years, following Argentina's World Cup final defeat to Spain. The AFA moved quickly to give him the send-off he deserves.
His final dance is set - Argentina versus Benin on October 6 at the Estadio Monumental in Buenos Aires. Argentina will play three home friendlies, against Bolivia on September 30 in Cordoba, Burkina Faso on October 3, and Benin on October 6. Messi will play only the Benin game alongside friends Rodrigo De Paul and Giovani Lo Celso, with all members of the 2022 World Cup-winning squad invited with their families for an expected 85,000 crowd.
Off the pitch, Switzerland captain Granit Xhaka has withdrawn from the national team after admitting to obtaining a fake Covid-19 vaccination certificate in 2022. The 33-year-old Sunderland midfielder, Switzerland's most capped player with 152 caps, said in an Instagram post: "It was a mistake. I am sorry. In this turbulent emotional state, I obtained a certificate instead of clarifying my questions through proper channels." Lucerne prosecutors have opened an investigation for document forgery, which can carry up to five years under Swiss law. The Swiss FA said it was a joint decision that it is in the team's best interest to play without him for the four Nations League games against North Macedonia, Scotland and Slovenia.
From Kandanda House to Wembley to the Monumental, football this week is a reminder that the game is never just about 90 minutes. Kenya has the money, the broadcast deal, the sponsors and the talent to finally build a sustainable league, yet once again finds itself in a courtroom instead of a stadium. The SportPesa billions will mean little if court orders continue to determine fixtures.
For Benni McCarthy, the break is a chance to build belief without the pressure of qualification - to test Olunga's supporting cast and give the home-based players a platform at Nyayo before a hostile trip to Conakry.
In Europe, Tuchel faces his first real crisis in an England shirt, not from tactics but from availability, while Messi's farewell in Buenos Aires will close a chapter that no amount of legal wrangles or Nations League points can overshadow.
