Orengo challenges Sifuna as battle for Linda Mwananchi 2027 ticket takes shape

Siaya Governor James Orengo has challenged the emerging perception that Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna should automatically become Linda Mwananchi's presidential candidate, setting the stage for an internal contest over who will carry the opposition movement's ticket in the 2027 General Election.

Orengo says he is prepared to compete against Sifuna or any other aspirant, but insists the movement must eventually settle on one presidential candidate to face President William Ruto.

The veteran politician argues that allowing several leaders to declare their ambitions should not be interpreted as division, provided the eventual candidate is selected through an open and credible process.

“There is nothing wrong with various candidates having presidential ambitions within Linda Mwananchi or the opposition,” Orengo told Taifa Leo.

He said all aspirants should be given an opportunity to compete before the movement settles on one candidate.

The intervention introduces a potentially significant test for Linda Mwananchi as it attempts to transform itself from a political movement into an electoral force ahead of 2027.

Orengo rejects political ‘coronation’

Orengo's central argument is that the opposition should avoid selecting its presidential candidate through closed-door arrangements.

Instead, he wants a transparent nomination process.

He pointed to ODM's 2007 presidential contest, when Raila Odinga, William Ruto, Musalia Mudavadi, Najib Balala and Joe Nyaga initially pursued the party's presidential ticket before Raila emerged as the candidate.

For Orengo, competing ambitions can coexist with opposition unity.

His position, however, challenges sections of Linda Mwananchi that have increasingly presented Sifuna as a potential standard-bearer.

Sifuna's national profile has grown considerably as he positions himself as one of the most vocal critics of President Ruto's administration.

He has also been mobilising younger voters and advocating the creation of a broad opposition coalition capable of mounting a serious challenge to Ruto.

From backing Sifuna to competing with him

The emerging competition is particularly notable because Orengo previously appeared to throw his weight behind Sifuna.

During a Linda Mwananchi rally in Bungoma in July, Orengo publicly pledged to stand with Sifuna as the Nairobi senator launched his presidential journey.

But Orengo has since declared that he too intends to contest the presidency.

His entry means Linda Mwananchi must now confront a question it had been able to postpone: who should ultimately lead the movement into the 2027 election?

Orengo insists his candidacy does not amount to an attempt to undermine Sifuna.

He argues that a democratic opposition should accommodate competing ambitions before eventually rallying behind one candidate.

Sifuna keeps his cards close

Sifuna, meanwhile, appears to be taking a more cautious public position on his presidential plans.

In an interview with NTV on Tuesday, he said the immediate priority should be building an opposition coalition capable of defeating Ruto rather than focusing prematurely on individual presidential ambitions.

Sifuna said he was concentrating on opposition unity, voter registration among young Kenyans and developing an alternative political narrative ahead of the election.

That position is consistent with his argument that the 2027 contest should ultimately become a two-horse race between Ruto and one opposition candidate.

The difficulty will be deciding who that candidate should be.

Linda Mwananchi faces political vehicle problem

There is another complication.

Linda Mwananchi still needs a political vehicle capable of fielding candidates in the General Election.

An application to reserve the name “Linda Mwananchi Party” was rejected by the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties, complicating efforts to transform the movement into a registered party.

Sifuna has previously indicated that he may need another political vehicle to contest the presidency following his fallout with ODM.

Orengo and other leaders associated with Linda Mwananchi have also had increasingly difficult relations with sections of the ODM leadership as the party deepens cooperation with President Ruto.

That means the movement must resolve two major questions: which party will carry its candidates, and who will become its presidential flag bearer?

Opposition's bigger 2027 problem

The Orengo-Sifuna contest also reflects a much larger challenge facing President Ruto's opponents.

Several opposition figures have either declared presidential ambitions or are considered potential candidates, including Kalonzo Musyoka, Fred Matiang'i, Rigathi Gachagua, Martha Karua and Eugene Wamalwa.

Opposition leaders broadly acknowledge that fielding several candidates against Ruto could divide the anti-government vote.

Sifuna himself has advocated a two-horse race, arguing that opposition leaders should negotiate and eventually settle on one challenger.

Orengo agrees with the principle of a single candidate.

The disagreement is over how that person should be selected.

That distinction could become increasingly important as the election approaches.

Kenya's political history contains several examples where opposition fragmentation benefited an incumbent, particularly during the multiparty elections of the 1990s.

Linda Mwananchi must therefore balance two competing objectives: allowing its leaders to pursue legitimate political ambitions while preventing those ambitions from fracturing the movement.

For now, Orengo says competition should come first and unity afterwards.

Whether Sifuna and the movement's other leaders agree on the process could determine whether Linda Mwananchi emerges as a serious national opposition force — or becomes another battleground for competing presidential ambitions.
