Salgaa Crash Disrupts Nakuru-Eldoret Highway as Separate Collision Is Reported in Laikipia

23, Oct 2026 / 3 min read / By Maureen Onyango

NAKURU, Kenya — Wrecked vehicles and traffic queues marked a tense night on two Kenyan roads after separate crashes were reported at Salgaa along the Nakuru-Eldoret Highway and at Kwa Wanjiku Centre in Laikipia West.

Images circulating from Salgaa showed badly damaged vehicles, with some reportedly overturned on the road. Motorists were left waiting as movement through the affected section was disrupted.

The full extent of the crash remained unclear at the time of reporting. The number of vehicles involved, possible casualties and the cause had not been officially established.

A separate collision was reported at Kwa Wanjiku Centre along the Nyahururu-Kinamba Road, involving a vehicle said to have been carrying Simon Mburu, a Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) aspirant for the Laikipia West parliamentary seat.

Images from the scene appeared to show substantial damage to the front of a car and an overturned tractor. Reports also indicated that another collision involving vehicles occurred nearby, adding to the traffic disruption.

Claims circulating after the incident said Mburu was safe. However, his condition and that of the other people involved could not be independently confirmed.

The two incidents were reported at different locations. There was no indication that they were connected.

Salgaa's accident history puts road safety back in focus

The latest reported crash comes amid a long history of serious road accidents along the Nakuru-Eldoret Highway.

On August 22, 2026, a multi-vehicle collision near Simba Cement at Salgaa caused heavy traffic and prompted emergency teams to respond. Reports at the time described extensive vehicle damage, although casualty details were not immediately settled. <Cite refs={["turn502148search0","turn502148search2"]}/>

More recently, a crash involving a vehicle carrying mourners from Kisumu injured 17 people at Migaa along the same highway, according to a report published on October 18. The Kenya Red Cross said rescue teams worked to free a person trapped in the wreckage and later confirmed that traffic had resumed. <Cite refs={["turn502148search11"]}/>

On October 6, a fuel tanker accident at Sachangwan also triggered a fire and temporarily disrupted traffic. The Kenya Red Cross reported attending to two casualties. <Cite refs={["turn502148search9"]}/>

These incidents highlight the risks faced by motorists using the busy corridor. However, the cause of Thursday night's reported Salgaa crash remains unknown, and it would be premature to attribute it to speeding, mechanical failure or road conditions without findings from investigators.

The area is also associated with the 2009 Sachangwan oil tanker disaster, in which an overturned tanker caught fire as people gathered around spilled fuel. The tragedy claimed scores of lives and remains a grim reminder of the dangers surrounding major road incidents. <Cite refs={["turn502148search36","turn502148search13"]}/>

Questions remain over Laikipia collision

At Kwa Wanjiku Centre, the reported collision involving Mburu's vehicle and a tractor raised separate questions about what happened before the vehicles came together.

The images described in reports showed damage to both vehicles, but photographs alone cannot establish the sequence of events or determine responsibility.

Reports of a second collision at the same location also suggested that traffic management became an immediate concern as people gathered and officers worked at the scene. The precise circumstances of that incident were not independently confirmed.

No verified account was available to establish whether anyone was injured in either Laikipia collision.

What motorists need to know

Until authorities provide verified updates, motorists travelling through the affected areas should follow police directions, slow down near crash scenes and avoid stopping on the carriageway to take photographs.

A collision can create further danger when approaching drivers encounter stationary traffic or debris without sufficient warning.

The immediate priority is to establish whether anyone was injured, clear damaged vehicles safely and determine how the crashes occurred.

For now, the reported incidents remain a reminder of how quickly a collision can disrupt travel on busy roads. Official confirmation of casualties, the vehicles involved and the circumstances of both incidents is still needed.
