President William Ruto has set the record straight, insisting that there will be no Handshake between him and Opposition leader Raila Odinga
He explained that as much as he is ready to work with leaders from different political divides, there is no room for a Handshake.
"Niliwaambia wenzangu wa upinzani kuwa sina shida na mazungumzo, bora wasiseme mambo ya Handshake," Ruto said.
This translates to: I told my fellows in opposition that I don't have any problem with talks as long as they won't suggest a Handshake.
Speaking on Sunday at State House, President Ruto noted that his administration needs a strong, vibrant opposition to check government.
"I want an opposition that will hold the government accountable. That's why I am against the Handshake," he said.
The President also said he was against handshake because, in that situation, the government hides some figures from the public.
" I am running a government that is accountable to Kenyans; my Cabinet secretaries are accountable. I want an Opposition that will hold the government accountable. That's why I am against the Handshake," he said.
The Head of State said he is a great believer in a system of government and opposition, as it was the only way to hold an executive to account.
Holding the state to account, Ruto said, works for everybody including the citizens, government and opposition, as they all become part of the success.
Kenya Kwanza government has been blaming former President Uhuru Kenyatta and Raila Odinga 'Handshake government' for "ruining the country's economy" with a big appetite for loans.
