UDA Calls for Halt to Raila's Night Vigil Amidst Security Concerns

The United Democratic Alliance (UDA) Secretary General, Cleophas Malala, has intensified his opposition to the opposition's activities, urging authorities to stop its planned night vigil. Malala raised concerns about the vigil's potential to confuse security agents, citing fears of chaos similar to past protests.

Addressing UDA grassroots leaders in Nairobi at the Hustlers Plaza meeting, the former Kakamega Senator alleged that the opposition may exploit the cover of darkness to cause destruction of property. He claimed that UDA had intelligence reports suggesting a sinister motive behind the change from daytime protests to a night vigil.

Despite the opposition's announcement of the night vigil to commemorate those who lost their lives during demonstrations, Malala questioned why alternative means of mourning were not explored. He suggested that other peaceful ways, such as attending church to pray for the victims, should have been considered.

Malala further asserted that Raila Odinga, the leader of the Azimio La Umoja party, was employing aggressive tactics, including protests and vigils, to initiate a handshake with President William Ruto. This claim has been consistently refuted by Raila, who maintains his commitment to peaceful dialogue.

Amidst the tensions between Raila and Ruto, Raila expressed his willingness to engage in dialogue with peace envoys aiming to mediate a truce between the conflicting parties. However, efforts by Tanzania's President Samia Suluhu to mediate were reportedly hindered when President Ruto declined to meet her during her visit to Kenya in mid-July 2023.

As the political landscape remains tense, international entities like the Commonwealth have offered to unite Raila and Ruto in an attempt to restore peace and tranquility in Kenya. Despite the challenging circumstances, stakeholders continue to search for avenues of reconciliation and resolution to pave the way for a more united future.
