The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has officially revoked the registration of 33 teachers across the country.
In a Gazette notice dated February 5, TSC Chief Executive Officer Nancy Macharia stated that the decision was made under Section 30(2) of the Teachers Service Commission Act.
"Pursuant to the powers granted under Section 30(1)(e) of the Teachers Service Commission Act, Chapter 212 of the Laws of Kenya, the Commission hereby notifies the public that the individuals listed below have been removed from the Register of Teachers under Section 30(2) of the Act," the Gazette notice read.
Once deregistered, a teacher is immediately barred from engaging in any teaching activities in both public and private institutions.
The notice also specified that the deregistration took effect on January 7, 2025, following disciplinary proceedings against the affected individuals, suggesting possible breaches of professional conduct.
Under Section 30 of the TSC Act, teachers can be deregistered for various reasons, including fraudulent registration, criminal convictions, sexual offenses, and medical conditions that impair their ability to teach.
School administrators have been warned against employing unregistered teachers, with penalties including a fine of at least KSh 100,000 or a two-year prison sentence.
"In accordance with Regulation 18(1)(c) and (d) of the Code of Regulations for Teachers and Section 45 of the TSC Act, any person who is not registered under the Act and engages in teaching commits an offense," the notice emphasized.
This latest round of deregistrations follows similar actions in August 2024, when 33 teachers were removed from the register. Prior to that, 65 teachers were struck off in an earlier wave of disciplinary measures.
