His death was confirmed by Willis Owino-Ong'or who identified himself as the late professor's first cousin. In a statement, he expressed his grief over the loss.
"It's a sad morning for me. I have lost my first cousin, son of my aunt , my brother in Christ and friend , Prof. Phillip Raburu, this morning at 4.30 am in Eldoret Hospital. He fought gallantly, but God saw it fit to take him, "he said .
Owino -Ong'or revealed that Raburu had expressed a desire to "go home" the previous day , words the family later understood differently following his death.
He also extended his condolences to the late Professor's wife , Elizabeth, their children Jessie , Eugene, Steve and Joy , as well as the extended family.
University of Eldoret student leaders also paid tribute to the late academic, remembering him for his dedication to students and the Institution.
Student President Collins Kimutai described Prof. Raburu as a leader who went beyond his administrative duties to support and guide students.
"Prof. Raburu was not just a leader in our university - he was a mentor, a father figure and a true servant of knowledge," Kimutai said.
Kimutai , speaking on behalf of the student community, extended condolences to the bereaved family, university management, staff and colleagues. He said Raburu's contribution to the university would remain part of his legacy .
Prof. Raburu hailed from Mingo Village in Kisumu county. He held a PhD in Environmental studies from Moi University, a Master of Science degree in Hydrobiology from the University of Nairobi and a Bachelor of Science degree from the same Institution.
Before joining the University of Eldoret, he taught at several teacher training colleges and later worked at Moi University before rising through the ranks at the University of Eldoret.
Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced by the family in due course as the university community comes to terms with the loss of one of its senior administrators.
