President William Ruto has reached out to former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, extending an olive branch for one-on-one talks. In a statement on his official social media pages on Tuesday, July 25, Ruto expressed his readiness to engage with the opposition leader whenever Raila was prepared for discussions.
However, Ruto noted that he was currently out of the country attending an official event in Tanzania and would be available to meet with Raila upon his return.
"My friend Raila Odinga, I am off to Tanzania for a human capital meeting to harmonise the expansion of employment opportunities in our continent. I will be back tomorrow evening, and as you have always known, am available to meet one on one with you anytime at your convenience," Ruto stated.
As of the time of publication, Raila had not yet responded to Ruto's offer.
The president's gesture comes after Raila disclosed that mediation talks, intended to be led by Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu, had collapsed. Raila had accused Ruto of inviting Suluhu to Kenya but subsequently delaying the meeting, leading the Tanzanian head of state to return home without any progress.
While Ruto's extension of an olive branch may be seen as a positive step towards dialogue, some analysts view it as a public gesture, hinting that he does not require a third party to agree to a truce with the opposition leader.
Internationally, there have been calls from the international community and religious groups for both leaders to find common ground and put an end to the ongoing demonstrations, which have resulted in loss of lives and injuries to many Kenyans.
Raila's faction, led by Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka, recently held a meeting with diplomats to explore possibilities for constructive talks. Prior to this, officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs had indicated that the government was open to engaging with the opposition in meaningful discussions.
As the nation looks towards a potential truce, Kenyans hope that dialogue between President Ruto and Raila will lead to a resolution, fostering a more united and peaceful Kenya.
