Inflation in Kenya reached 4.6 percent in June 2024, leading to higher prices for essential commodities, including fuel and vegetables. This information was revealed in the latest inflation highlights released by the Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) on Sunday, prepared by the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics.
Fuel prices saw significant increases, with cooking gas (Liquefied Petroleum Gas or LPG) experiencing the highest rise at 4.7 percent. Petrol, diesel, and kerosene prices also went up by 4.3 percent, 3.5 percent, and 1.0 percent, respectively.
Vegetable prices increased as well, with onions rising by 53.3 percent, kale (sukumawiki) by 45.3 percent, and cabbages by 24.2 percent.
"Inflation is calculated as the change in price between June 2024 and June 2023," stated the CBK regarding the price changes.
Despite the overall inflation, electricity prices saw a decrease, providing some relief to consumers. Prices dipped by 6.8 percent for 200 kilowatts and 5.3 percent for 50 kilowatts.
The average increase in fuel prices due to inflation was 6.4 percent.
Conversely, some food items experienced price drops due to favorable rainfall during the 2023/2024 calendar year. Maize flour prices fell by 33.2 percent, while wheat flour recorded a 10 percent decrease. Additionally, sugar prices dropped by 17.7 percent, offering some relief to Kenyans struggling with the high cost of living.
