Popular scriptwriter and actor Abel Mutua, in collaboration with his business partner, director, and actor Phillip ‘Phil’ Karanja, are set to secure a substantial payout of at least $60,000 (Sh8.8 million) from the sale of their 2020 movie, "Click Click Bang," to Netflix, the renowned American video-on-demand streaming platform.
This Netflix deal represents a significant milestone for the creative duo, as their film has been chosen for a rerun on the streaming service.
Veteran film producer Reuben Odanga, renowned for his notable productions such as "Selina," "Nira," "Nuru," "Kiu," and "Saida," has confirmed the substantial payment from Netflix.
Odanga, whose film "Nafsi" was also picked by Netflix in 2021, shared this exciting development in a recent interview.
He revealed that Netflix is poised to compensate him with $60,000 for "Nafsi," a sum that he expressed satisfaction with. He believes that Phil Karanja is likely to receive a comparable payment for the rerun of "Click Click Bang."
Abel Mutua disclosed that "Click Click Bang" raked in Sh9 million when it premiered in 2020. From the movie's total revenue, Abel and Phil managed to secure a profit of Sh2 million, taking into account their Sh7 million investment in production and distribution expenses.
Abel Mutua underscored their financial triumph, stating, "From pre-production to marketing, we've spent Sh7 million. The returns are nearly in the millions, so it has been a success. We are truly grateful because most film projects don't turn a profit."
Abel and Phil teamed up in 2012 to establish their production company, Phil-It Productions, after their departure from the popular television show "Tahidi High."
One of their initial productions under Phil-It was the comedic series "The Real Househelps of Kawangware," which propelled comedians Timothy ‘Njugush’ Kimani and Steven ‘DJ Shiti’ Oduor to stardom.
Phil Karanja clarified that it was a collaboration with Protel Studios, who held the Intellectual Property Rights. Their role primarily focused on creative aspects, including scripting, casting, and directing.
In 2016, Phil-It produced its first independent film, the "Sue Na Johnnie" series, which was later picked up by Showmax in 2017.
The success of "Sue Na Johnnie" opened doors to more opportunities for Abel Mutua and Phil Karanja, setting the stage for their ongoing achievements in the entertainment industry.
