Nimrod Mbai, the Member of Parliament for Kitui East Constituency, sparked outrage on social media after a video captured him allegedly assaulting a Kenya Power (KPLC) employee during a heated confrontation.
The incident unfolded when Mbai confronted the workers, accusing them of trespassing on his Kajiado farm and removing installed electrical poles without his consent.
In the disturbing footage, the enraged MP can be seen grabbing the worker by the neck and repeatedly striking him in the face, leaving the employee in a vulnerable state, desperately pleading for mercy.
Mbai, visibly angered by the worker's response and defiance, ordered the workers to hurry their driver to the scene of the altercation.
During the incident, Mbai invoked a directive allegedly issued by President William Ruto, stating that existing electrical installations should not be removed and only meters should be installed.
The MP claimed that he had been subjected to constant harassment by Kenya Power over an alleged illegal connection, despite his willingness to pay monthly electricity bills promptly.
Moreover, Mbai accused Kenya Power of disregarding a Presidential order prohibiting the disconnection of homes suspected of illegal power tapping. President Ruto had emphasized the importance of focusing on enhancing last-mile connectivity and called for reconnection of homes that were previously disconnected.
The video depicting the MP's assault on the KPLC employee went viral, drawing widespread condemnation and sparking discussions about the abuse of power and the need for accountability among public officials.
Critics argued that regardless of the circumstances, resorting to violence was unacceptable and highlighted the importance of resolving disputes through peaceful means.
The incident has raised concerns about the safety of workers in their line of duty and has called for a thorough investigation into the matter to ensure justice is served.
