Amidst a growing healthcare crisis linked to over 500 deaths, the national government has issued a directive urging striking doctors to return to the negotiation table with their respective county administrations and hospitals.

Head of Public Service, Felix Koskei, announced this directive as tensions rise, with some counties threatening dismissal of non-compliant doctors.

During a press briefing, Koskei emphasized the readiness of county governments to engage in negotiations for collective bargaining agreements (CBAs), stressing the importance of dialogue in resolving the crisis.

While some counties report full operation in healthcare facilities, others, like Nyeri county, have taken a harsh stance by dismissing striking doctors.

Several counties, including Kakamega, Kiambu, Tharaka Nithi, Kilifi, and Kisumu, have set a deadline for striking doctors to return to work or face termination.

The strike's impact has been national, with major healthcare providers like Kenyatta National Hospital and Kenyatta University Teaching, Referral, and Research Hospital (KUTRRH) ready to engage with medical staff to end the impasse.

Despite the government's call for negotiations, a warning was issued to striking doctors, giving them 24 hours to call off the strike or face disciplinary action, in compliance with a court order.

The National Assembly Labour Committee has also intervened, scheduling a meeting with involved parties if the strike persists.
