The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) on Tuesday conducted coordinated raids at the home of Kiambu Governor Paul Njoroge Kimani, popularly known as Wamatangi, along with the residences and offices of eight other senior county officials.

The raids are part of an ongoing investigation into alleged corruption and procurement irregularities in the awarding of a Sh230 million contract during the 2022/2023 financial year.

In a statement, the EACC said the probe targets suspected conflict of interest, abuse of office, and procurement malpractices related to a tender for the supply and implementation of an Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system.

The commission confirmed seizing critical evidence, including Sh12 million and USD 13,000 in cash from Governor Wamatangi’s residence.

Shortly after the operation, the governor took to social media platform X to urge Kiambu residents to remain calm.

“To the great people of Kiambu County, I urge you to remain calm and peaceful. We shall overcome. We will never give in to intimidation,” he wrote, adding that he would address the media from EACC headquarters.

Following the raid, protests broke out outside Wamatangi’s residence, with demonstrators waving branches and chanting in solidarity with the governor.

EACC said the operation marks a significant step in the probe and noted that findings from the investigation will determine whether criminal charges, asset forfeitures, or other legal actions will follow.

“Upon conclusion of the investigation, the findings will guide the appropriate course of action which may include prosecution, forfeiture of unexplained assets, and confiscation of corruption-linked proceeds,” read the commission’s statement.
