Former Murang'a Governor's Wife Arrested by EACC in Ksh140 Million Graft Probe

17, Apr 2024 / 2 min read / By Livenow Africa

The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) announced on Wednesday, April 17, the arrest of Jane Waigwe Kimani, the wife of former Murang'a governor Mwangi wa Iria, alongside her brother, Solomon Mutura Kimani. The arrests are related to their suspected involvement in a Ksh140 million graft case.

According to reports, the siblings are currently appearing before the Milimani Anti-Corruption Court for plea-taking. They are identified as directors of a company allegedly used as a conduit for the fraudulent scheme.

EACC disclosed that six other suspects, including the former Governor, failed to comply with summons to appear before the commission on Wednesday at 8 a.m.

On Saturday, April 13, the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) recommended six charges in connection with the Ksh140 million graft case. The charges stem from EACC investigations revealing procurement irregularities and conflict of interest in the awarding of publicity tenders in Murang'a County.

The investigation unveiled that two media consultancy firms linked closely to Mwangi wa Iria and his wife were awarded tenders in the 2014/2015 and 2015/2016 financial years.

Wa Iria, the main suspect in the case, dismissed the allegations as a political witch-hunt by the government.

Meanwhile, Azimio Principal Kalonzo Musyoka pledged unwavering support to Wa Iria during the graft investigations, stating that government intimidation would not deter the coalition from its oversight role.

"We shall stand with our brother Mwangi Wa Iria come rain or shine. You cannot weaponize the war against corruption," Kalonzo declared during a speech in Mumias, Kakamega County.

Kalonzo further urged EACC to prosecute high-profile individuals in the government accused of criminal activities.
