Pregnancy is often described as one of life’s most beautiful journeys. For Kenyan content creator Prudence Chepkirui Tonui, popularly known as King Kalala, that description does not quite match reality.
The first-time mother-to-be has offered a candid take on pregnancy, joking that she is yet to discover the “beautiful” part — particularly when getting a good night’s sleep has become a challenge.
Speaking on Tuesday, August 18, Kalala questioned the familiar idea that pregnancy is an enjoyable experience filled with special “perks”.
“You guys are liars. Oh, pregnancy is a very beautiful thing, a beautiful experience; which part of it is beautiful? Hiyo part huwezi lala? When you are allergic to your bed? Do not lie to us.”
Her comments quickly tapped into a conversation many expectant mothers can relate to: the gap between the romantic picture of pregnancy and the physical reality of carrying a baby.
‘Where are the pregnancy perks?’
Kalala also took aim at the way society talks about special treatment for pregnant women.
She questioned why pregnant women are often told that pregnancy comes with privileges when, in everyday situations, they may still struggle to get the support they need.
“You guys are liars, eti ohh it comes with perks na nyinyi ndio watu mnakataa kutusimamia kwa matatu eti tununue magari?” she said.
The joke carried a more serious point. Pregnancy can change how a woman sleeps, moves and manages everyday activities. For some women, the experience can involve fatigue, discomfort and other physical changes that are not always captured in polished pregnancy announcements and social media posts.
Kalala's comments therefore offer a less glamorous, more relatable account of entering motherhood.
Kalala announced pregnancy in July
Kalala revealed that she was expecting her first child in July 2026.
In an Instagram post on July 21, she announced the pregnancy with the words “LONG LIVE THE KLAN! +1!”, accompanying the message with photographs showing her baby bump.
She later celebrated the new chapter with another playful message: “Hata simba hupatikana.”
Known for her blunt humour, distinctive voice and outspoken personality, Kalala has continued to share aspects of her life with her audience while preparing for motherhood.
Her latest comments are in keeping with that style. Rather than presenting pregnancy as a picture-perfect experience, she has chosen to laugh about some of its less comfortable moments.
The reality behind the ‘glow’
There is, of course, no single way to experience pregnancy.
Some women describe it as joyful and deeply meaningful. Others experience significant discomfort. Many experience both at different stages.
That is why Kalala's remarks have struck a familiar chord. The so-called pregnancy glow may be easy to photograph, but sleepless nights and physical discomfort are less likely to make it into an Instagram post.
Her message is not that pregnancy is bad. It is that women should be allowed to talk honestly about what it feels like without having to package every part of the experience as beautiful.
And as Kalala prepares to become a mother for the first time, her followers are getting a very different kind of pregnancy diary — one filled with humour, honesty and a few sleepless nights.
