Absa Celebrates Nairobi’s 2029 World Championships Bid After Nearly KSh2bn Sports Investment

Absa Bank Kenya has welcomed Nairobi’s successful bid to host the 2029 World Athletics Championships, saying the historic decision reflects decades of investment in Kenyan athletics and the country’s ability to stage major international sporting events.

The bank said it has invested close to KSh2 billion in Kenya’s sports ecosystem over the past decade, including sponsorship of international athletics events that have helped build the country’s profile as a potential host of major global competitions.

Nairobi’s selection to host the championships will bring the senior World Athletics Championships to African soil for the first time, marking a significant milestone for Kenya and the continent.

Absa said Kenya’s successful bid was built on generations of sporting achievement as well as efforts by Athletics Kenya, government and other partners to strengthen the country’s capacity to host international competitions.

“We are absolutely thrilled to celebrate this historic achievement for Kenya, Africa and the global athletics community,” Absa Bank Kenya Marketing and Corporate Affairs Director Mwihaki Wachira said.

“Bringing the World Athletics Championships to African soil for the first time is a defining moment that reflects decades of excellence by Kenyan athletes, the leadership of Athletics Kenya and the collective efforts of all those who have worked to elevate the sport.”

Building Kenya’s hosting credentials

Absa has been the title sponsor of the Kip Keino Classic for six years, helping support a competition that has grown into one of Africa’s prominent international track and field meetings.

The event is part of the World Athletics Continental Tour Gold series and has brought leading Kenyan and international athletes to Nairobi.

According to the bank, successfully staging events such as the Kip Keino Classic has helped demonstrate Nairobi’s capacity to organise athletics competitions meeting international standards.

“For years, our investment in events such as the Absa Kip Keino Classic and Absa Sirikwa Classic has been driven by a belief that Kenya belongs on the global stage,” Wachira said.

The bank also sponsors the Absa Sirikwa Classic Cross Country, a World Athletics Gold Level Cross Country Tour event held at Lobo Village in Eldoret.

Bigger test awaits Kenya

Hosting the 2029 World Athletics Championships will, however, be on a significantly larger scale.

The championships bring together the world’s leading track and field athletes and attract thousands of athletes, officials, journalists and visitors from around the world.

For Kenya, the successful bid therefore shifts attention from winning hosting rights to preparing Nairobi to deliver the event.

Infrastructure, accommodation, transport, security, broadcasting facilities and competition venues will all come under scrutiny in the run-up to 2029.

The championships could also provide Kenya with an opportunity to leverage its global athletics reputation to attract sports tourism, investment and commercial partnerships.

Beyond event sponsorship

Absa said its athletics investment also includes athlete welfare programmes.

The bank runs financial-literacy programmes in training camps aimed at helping athletes manage competition earnings, investments and their financial lives after their sporting careers.

This is particularly relevant in Kenyan athletics, where successful runners can earn substantial prize money and endorsement income during relatively short competitive careers.

Absa said Nairobi’s successful 2029 bid provides an opportunity to build on that investment while showcasing Kenyan athletics to a global audience.

The bank congratulated Athletics Kenya, the Ministry of Youth Affairs, Creative Economy and Sports, athletes, coaches and support teams involved in developing the sport.

With hosting rights now secured, attention turns to the preparations Kenya must complete over the next three years to deliver what will be the first World Athletics Championships staged in Africa.
