The police in Nairobi's Langata Sub-County are investigating an incident where a police officer allegedly shot dead his girlfriend and a colleague's wife before turning the gun on himself.
According to a police report filed on Sunday, March 5, at Langata Police Station under OB number 54/5/3/2023, the colleague's spouse who was shot in the incident was responding to a distress call when she met her untimely death.
The report further indicated that the officer implicated in the case had been deployed on night patrol duties at Clean Shelf, NHC, and Southlands area for the night.
"Initially, the officer in the company of two other officers had reached a clean shelf area where he excused himself to pick something from his house," the police report reads in part.
The officer's house was about 500 meters from where their patrol duty was and shortly after the officer had left, the other police officers heard gunshots.
Police officers who responded to the scene indicated that the officer died as a result of a self-inflicted gushots that entered his neck in the front and exited from the back.
The police report also indicated that the deceased "locked his house door from the inside where he shot his girlfriend."
Eyewitnesses indicated to the media that the suspect involved in the shooting had appeared troubled recently even though the reason behind the shooting is yet to be established.
"The scene has been processed by Scenes of Crime Personnel," the report concluded.
The bodies of the deceased were moved to City Mortuary and Chiromo Funeral Home and are awaiting autopsy.
Cases of police officers killing their loved ones and colleagues or committing suicide have been on the rise prompting action from the office of Second Lady Dorcas Gachagua.
In January 2023, Dorcas committed to supporting the welfare of police officers by organising mass weddings and prayers for them.
Speaking after meeting the Inspector General of Police Japhet Koome, the Second Lady emphasised the need to instill and cultivate family values in the officers who may have been stressed or depressed while in their line of work.
She expressed concerns over the rising cases of mental issues not just among police officers but among Kenyans and reiterated her commitment to offering rehabilitation to some of the officers involved in drugs and substance abuse.
