A police officer in Nairobi’s Kamukunji area narrowly escaped death after a colleague allegedly attempted to shoot him during a heated altercation linked to a suspected love triangle in the early hours of Wednesday.
The incident, recorded under OB No. 02/26/03/2025 at around 4:30 a.m., unfolded when two officers got into a confrontation that nearly turned deadly.
According to a report filed at Kamukunji Police Station, Constable Piro had excused himself from two colleagues at the Muthurwa Police Post to retrieve his mobile phone, which he had left charging at a nearby bar and lodge. However, upon arrival, he was confronted by another officer, Constable Juma, who accused him of having an affair with his girlfriend.
The argument escalated when Juma slapped Piro multiple times before drawing his AK-47 rifle and firing a shot. The bullet missed Piro but tore through a metal wall and grill. He managed to escape unhurt and immediately reported the incident to Kamukunji Police Station.
Crime scene investigators processed the location, though the spent cartridge was not recovered. Juma initially fled the scene but later surrendered and was taken into custody. His firearm was confiscated as investigations continue.
The incident has once again raised concerns over the growing number of police-involved shootings in Kenya.
Since the beginning of the year, at least five cases have been reported where officers have discharged their firearms during personal disputes or under unclear circumstances.
In February, an officer in Nakuru shot and wounded a colleague during a drunken altercation. Weeks later, a traffic officer in Mombasa opened fire during an argument with a boda boda rider, injuring a bystander.
Authorities have reiterated the need for strict measures to prevent such incidents, emphasizing the importance of discipline and responsible firearm use among officers.
