A hit-and-run crash in Kirinyaga County has renewed concerns over road safety along the Mumbu stretch of the Piai–South Ngariama Road, with residents calling for urgent measures to prevent more deaths on a route they describe as increasingly dangerous.

A motorcyclist was killed and a passenger injured on Wednesday night after a lorry transporting dry maize reportedly collided with their motorcycle at Mumbu in Murinduko Ward, Mwea Sub-county.

The rider died at the scene, while the passenger was taken to Kerugoya County Referral Hospital, where he was reported to be in stable condition.

According to residents, the lorry driver did not stop after the crash and sped away, prompting calls for investigations and renewed demands for better road safety enforcement.

Residents say newly upgraded road has become a danger zone

Residents living near Mumbu say the accident has highlighted growing fears over speeding vehicles and inadequate safety measures along the recently tarmacked road.

Village elders James Simba and Joseph Maina Waweru described the area as an accident black spot, saying several lives have been lost along the stretch.

They want authorities to assess the road design and introduce safety interventions, including speed bumps and other traffic calming measures.

Residents led by Eliud Kirii have also urged the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) to act, arguing that the increasing movement of vehicles along the route requires stronger safety measures.

The human cost behind another road crash

The crash has left families mourning and communities questioning why fatal accidents continue to occur despite improvements in road infrastructure.

Caroline Wawira said her cousin John Muriithi Muchiri was among those involved in the crash and survived. She said the two victims were travelling home to Itangi in South Ngariama from Rogoi when the accident happened.

Police officers from Itangi helped transport the injured passenger to hospital, while traffic officers from Wang’uru moved the deceased’s body to the mortuary.
