  1. Museveni distances Uganda from the Sh2 trillion Lamu refinery

Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni has said Uganda will not invest in the planned Dangote refinery in Lamu, even as Kenya pushes ahead with the massive project. The refinery dominated headlines following Wednesday's groundbreaking, with President William Ruto saying its construction could create about 60,000 direct and indirect jobs and inject more than KSh2 billion a month into the economy through wages.   1. Sifuna camp wins Linda Mwananchi party-name battle

A tribunal has handed Edwin Sifuna's team a victory by overturning the Registrar of Political Parties' decision blocking reservation of the name Linda Mwananchi Party. The development is significant as political realignments and new party formations accelerate ahead of the 2027 General Election. 

  1. New SHA hospital contracting cycle begins amid dispute

October 1 marks the scheduled start of SHA's 2026–2029 provider-contracting period. However, disagreements have persisted between the Social Health Authority and hospital groups over provisions including payment timelines and the allocation of financial risk when claims are delayed.

  1. Mlolongo–Kamulu Road closes for two months

Motorists should expect disruption from today as the Mlolongo–Kamulu, or Quarry Road, closes for construction works until December 1. KURA has advised motorists to use designated alternative routes during the closure. 

  1. Kenyan students face sharply higher research-licence fees

New NACOSTI research-licensing charges take effect today. Master's students will pay KSh6,000, up from KSh1,000, while PhD researchers will pay KSh10,000 instead of KSh2,000. Undergraduate and other research categories are also affected by the revised fee structure.
