The body of Jabulile Ntimba was discovered wrapped in a sheet and half‑naked on a road in Dawn Park, east of Johannesburg, last Thursday. Police have now detained three suspects – a man and two women – in relation to her death, marking the latest development in a string of nine women’s bodies found in the same area over recent weeks.
Acting police chief Lieutenant General Puleng Dimpane hailed the arrests as a "breakthrough" and said officers are working "tirelessly to bring those responsible to justice". Deputy police chief Lieutenant General Tebello Mosikili added that a team of analysts is examining possible links between the cases, noting that Ntimba's killing appears to stem from a personal relationship, possibly involving a love triangle.
The three suspects are scheduled to appear in court on Monday. While several of the recent victims were found partially clothed and with injuries, police have not confirmed whether the deaths are connected or if a serial offender is at work.
South Africa is recognised as having one of the highest rates of gender‑based violence worldwide, coupled with a high overall murder rate. The country's Human Rights Commission estimated that an average of six women were murdered each day between April and June this year.
The spate of murders has triggered nationwide vigils and protests, with activists calling the situation a national disaster. The public outcry reflects growing fear and insecurity among women, prompting calls for stronger action against gender‑based violence.
