A series of murders that have claimed the lives of nine women in the Kempton Park region since July has sparked widespread grief and protest. One of the victims, jogger Elizabeth Moselakgomo – known locally as "Tsontso" – was found dead east of Johannesburg after disappearing on a routine run.
In response, fellow runners organised a tribute event in the city of Centurion, aiming to honour Moselakgomo and assert the right of women to run without fear. One participant, Nonhle Mpohlo, expressed the sentiment of the gathering, saying that they simply want to be able to run and return home without fearing they could be the next victim.
A separate vigil in Cape Town drew people together to remember all the victims and to press the government for decisive measures. The police have since established a task team to probe the killings and have advised women in the Kempton Park area to avoid walking or running alone, especially in isolated locations.
The community response highlights growing anxiety over personal safety for women in South Africa, while authorities pledge to intensify investigations and enhance public awareness of the risks.
