Elizabeth Auma, the mother of Brian Odhiambo, is calling on authorities to release her son’s body after it was allegedly found floating in Lake Nakuru on Monday, February 17.
Speaking to the press on Tuesday morning, Auma recounted how Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) officers reportedly retrieved the body but have since refused to hand it over.
According to her, two young fishermen first spotted the body in the lake. However, before they could retrieve it, a KWS patrol boat arrived. The fishermen attempted to intervene, but the armed officers allegedly threatened them before taking the body away.
“The young men found my son’s body in the water on Monday, but before they could remove it, a boat carrying KWS officers arrived. They attempted to stop them, but the officers threatened them,” Auma stated.
She has since searched multiple mortuaries, but no record of her son’s body has been found. In her plea, she emphasized that the family only seeks closure and a proper burial.
“Why don’t they give us the body? If they return it, we will not protest again. We just want to lay him to rest,” she added.
Despite the family's distress, KWS has yet to respond to the allegations. The situation has left Odhiambo’s relatives questioning why they are being denied access to the body.
This development follows a recent High Court ruling in Nakuru, which dismissed a case filed by Odhiambo’s family. On February 6, Justice Julius Nangea ruled that there was insufficient evidence proving Odhiambo was in KWS custody before his disappearance.
Following the court’s decision, Auma collapsed in tears outside the courtroom, expressing her anguish and frustration. Now, with the alleged discovery of her son’s body, she remains determined to find answers and bring him home for burial.
