Orengo Confirms New Political Vehicle as Sifuna Moves to Launch Party

NAIROBI, Kenya, Oct 1 — Siaya Governor James Orengo has confirmed plans to launch a political vehicle for his 2027 presidential bid, setting up a fresh test for efforts to unite Kenya’s opposition.

Orengo, who has been pushing for opposition leaders to agree on a single presidential candidate, said on Thursday that he would continue with the wider unity efforts while preparing his own political vehicle.

His announcement comes days after the Linda Mwananchi Movement formally endorsed Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna as its presidential candidate.

The development places the two senior opposition figures on separate political tracks for now, although both have continued to speak about the need for a broader opposition alliance.

Orengo Confirms New Political Vehicle as Sifuna Moves to Launch Party

“We are participating in this journey with the launch of a political vehicle and remain committed to opposition unity and identification of one presidential candidate,” Orengo said.

He also praised Linda Mwananchi following its recent success in a dispute over its name, signalling that his decision to establish a separate vehicle does not amount to a formal break with the movement.

“We laud the Linda Mwananchi success story and remain steadfast,” he said.

Orengo moves after Sifuna endorsement

Orengo's announcement follows a crucial Linda Mwananchi retreat held in Naivasha on September 26.

The movement emerged from the meeting with Sifuna formally designated as its leader and presidential candidate for the 2027 election.

The group also said Sifuna would lead the unveiling of the political party through which he intends to contest the presidency.

Orengo was absent from the retreat.

Members of the movement said he had sent his apologies because he was attending to a sick family member. They also maintained that his absence should not be interpreted as evidence of a split.

But the decision to endorse Sifuna has changed the political equation.

Orengo had previously made it clear that he wanted presidential ambitions within Linda Mwananchi subjected to a credible process before the movement settled on one candidate.

His decision to proceed with a separate political vehicle now gives him an independent platform while leaving open the possibility of negotiations with other opposition parties.

LDP reports emerge

Reports have linked Orengo's new vehicle to the Liberal Democratic Party, or LDP.

The Star reported on Thursday that Orengo was preparing to unveil the party, although the publication also noted that the name could still change. A source said the governor had already acquired a political vehicle for the 2027 election.

However, Orengo himself has not publicly confirmed that the party will be called LDP.

The name is significant because LDP is already listed by the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties as a fully registered Kenyan political party. The ORPP register lists it as Liberal Democratic Party, with certificate number 069 and a registration date of November 1, 2016.

That means the reported move should not be presented as the registration of an entirely new party unless and until the relevant political and registration changes are formally confirmed.

A crowded opposition field

Orengo's move comes as several opposition politicians develop separate political vehicles ahead of the 2027 election.

Sifuna is expected to unveil his political vehicle on October 3, according to recent reports. His camp has faced uncertainty over which registered party will ultimately carry his presidential bid.

The question became more complicated after attempts to use the Ukombozi name ran into a competing political arrangement.

Kalonzo Musyoka and other opposition leaders rebranded the Azimio coalition as the Ukombozi Alliance on September 21. Orengo was among the leaders associated with that new coalition.

That has left the opposition landscape with several political formations developing at the same time.

Linda Mwananchi has also indicated that it wants to work with other parties under a wider coalition arrangement rather than operate in isolation.

Babu Owino also has his own vehicle

The political restructuring extends beyond Orengo and Sifuna.

Embakasi East MP Babu Owino has established the Mwananchi Party and has been backed by Linda Mwananchi for the Nairobi gubernatorial race through that party.

The movement also resolved to support former Meru governor Kawira Mwangaza through her Umoja na Maendeleo Party.

This means leaders associated with the same political movement can retain separate parties while negotiating a broader coalition.

The question now is how those parties will eventually fit together if the opposition succeeds in settling on a single presidential candidate.

Orengo's next move

For Orengo, the immediate task is to build a political platform without abandoning his public call for opposition unity.

His latest statement leaves room for negotiations.

He has not said that his new political vehicle will automatically become the final opposition presidential platform. Instead, he continues to advocate for the eventual identification of one candidate.

That distinction matters as the 2027 election approaches.

The opposition is therefore facing two processes at once: individual politicians are securing parties and political vehicles, while their leaders are still discussing how those vehicles could eventually operate under one coalition.

Orengo's announcement adds another piece to that puzzle.

For now, Sifuna has the Linda Mwananchi presidential endorsement, while Orengo is preparing an independent political vehicle. Whether the two paths eventually converge will depend on negotiations among the opposition parties and their leaders in the months ahead.
