Public Service, Performance, and Delivery Management Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria has made a bold declaration, asserting that Raila Odinga will contest the presidency in the 2027 General Election, even if he secures the chairperson role at the African Union Commission (AUC).

Kuria elaborated that Odinga's pursuit of the AUC chairmanship serves as a temporary engagement, keeping him occupied until the next presidential contest.

"Baba is simply biding his time. It's better for him to engage in something productive rather than let his intellect go to waste. He wasn't meant to chair the AUC; his destiny lies in national politics," Kuria remarked during an interview on Spice FM.

The CS contended that Odinga would relinquish the AU position prematurely, allowing another East African leader to complete the remaining two years of the four-year term, should he secure the appointment.

"There are those who lack historical perspective and believe that Baba will be away for long. He will return. He will serve two years," Kuria asserted. "He might shorten his term and pass the baton, possibly to Kikwete, as he tends to pressing matters."

Despite his assertions, Kuria affirmed his support for Odinga's AU bid, highlighting its potential economic benefits for the region.

"I endorse Raila Odinga for the AU role. Having someone of his caliber represent us at the AU is crucial for our politics and East Africa. We will spare no effort to ensure he secures the position," Kuria added.

The vacancy for the AUC chairperson will arise next year, with Chad's Moussa Faki completing his two-term tenure. Faki assumed office in 2017 and secured a second term in 2021.

The AUC chairperson serves as the continent's highest-ranking official, acting as the Chief Executive Officer, legal representative of the AU, and the Commission’s Chief Accounting Officer. Elected by the Assembly for a four-year term, renewable once, incumbents are prohibited from engaging in political activities while in office.
