Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki has officially declared Wednesday, April 10, as a national holiday to commemorate the Idd-ul-Fitr celebrations.
In a special Gazette Notice issued on Tuesday, April 9, CS Kindiki announced that the nation will observe the Idd-ul-Fitr, marking the culmination of the holy month of Ramadhan.
Muslims across Kenya are gearing up to celebrate the Idd, signifying the end of their month-long fasting and spiritual reflection.
"It is notified for the general information of the public that, in the exercise of the powers conferred by section 2(1) of the Public Holidays Act, the Cabinet Secretary for Interior and National Administration declares that Wednesday, the 10th April 2024 shall be a Public Holiday to mark Idd-ul-Fitr," read an excerpt from the notice.
Following the official declaration, all government offices, educational institutions, and banks are expected to remain closed in observance of the religious festivities.
Since March 11, 2024, Muslims have dedicated themselves to fasting, prayer, and community service as part of the Ramadhan observance.
The announcement from CS Kindiki follows a gathering hosted by President William Ruto on April 9 at State House, where he hosted Muslim leaders for an Iftar Dinner.
During the event, concerns raised by the religious leaders, including challenges in obtaining National Identity cards (IDs), were addressed by President Ruto.
In response, the President announced the abolition of vetting processes during ID applications, effective from May 2024.
"We have now completed the policy document, and from the beginning of May this year, there will no longer be vetting for people who want to get IDs," affirmed President Ruto.
Additionally, President Ruto pledged to explore the possibility of making the Hustler Fund Shariah-compliant to accommodate Muslim participants who refrain from conventional financial programs due to interest charges.
