Kisumu Governor Prof. Anyang’ Nyong’o has expressed strong support for the growing political collaboration between President William Ruto and former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, calling it a major step toward national healing and inclusive development.

In a statement released on Wednesday, June 4, Nyong’o commended the two leaders for what he described as a bold and necessary partnership—one that is already delivering “political and economic dividends.”

“We wholeheartedly support the decision by President Ruto and Raila Odinga to work together in the interest of national unity and development,” Nyong’o said.

A Path Toward Unity and Growth

Governor Nyong’o emphasized that continued cooperation between the two political heavyweights could help dismantle long-standing divisions and energize grassroots development. He also called for more joint public engagements by the two leaders across different regions to solidify the spirit of inclusivity.

“We celebrate the peace, unity, and renewed sense of hope that this partnership has inspired across the country,” he noted.

He further praised the recently signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Ruto’s UDA and Raila’s ODM as a progressive blueprint for governance. The MoU outlines commitments to implement the National Dialogue Committee (NADCO) report, address youth unemployment, and enforce the two-thirds gender rule—policies Nyong’o believes are crucial for long-term stability and prosperity.

Progress in Kisumu

Nyong’o also applauded the national government’s ongoing investments in Kisumu County, including affordable housing, major roadworks, and air transport upgrades. He noted that these projects are already transforming the local economy and improving the quality of life for residents.

“Our appreciation extends further to President Ruto for the broad portfolio of development projects his administration has initiated in Kisumu County,” he said.

A Shift in Tone

The Governor’s remarks come just weeks after he had criticized the national government for sidelining county governments. In April, he publicly questioned the relevance of national bodies like the Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA) and Kenya Rural Roads Authority (KERA), stating that their functions should be fully devolved.

Despite earlier skepticism about the Raila-Ruto alliance, Nyong’o now appears to be embracing the partnership, urging both leaders to stay the course in delivering tangible results for Kenyans.

“What we are witnessing is a shift from political hostility to purposeful collaboration—something this country desperately needs,” he said.
