Gachagua Faces Political Storm as MPs Set to Table Impeachment Motion

01, Oct 2024 / 1 min read / By Livenow Africa

Members of Parliament (MPs) are set to table an ouster motion against Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua at the National Assembly today, Tuesday, at 2:30 pm. Majority Leader and Kikuyu MP Kimani Ichung'wah confirmed that the impeachment motion would be presented before the House floor.

For the motion to proceed, it will require the backing of 233 MPs. Reports suggest that 302 members have already signed in support of the motion. Gachagua faces accusations of violating Article 10 of the Constitution, with claims that his public statements have been inciteful, reckless, and capable of fostering ethnic tension.

Additionally, the Deputy President is accused of violating several constitutional provisions (Articles 147, 148, 174, 186, and 189) relating to his role as the principal assistant to the President. He also faces allegations of unlawfully acquiring assets using taxpayer money, with properties spread across Nyeri, Nairobi, and Kilifi counties.

If the motion succeeds, National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula will forward the resolution to Senate Speaker Amason Kingi within two days for further action.

"I urge President Ruto to put his house in order and allow us to work. We have a mandate to fulfill for the Kenyan people; we need to get down to work," Gachagua stated.
