5 Things You Must Know This Morning — Wednesday, September 23, 2026

23, Sep 2026 / 2 min read / By Livenow Africa

Here are five major developments to start the morning, prioritising Kenyan relevance and significant international stories.

1. Trump uses UN stage to threaten Iran as hopes of immediate peace deal fade

US President Donald Trump has used his UN General Assembly address to call for Iran's economic isolation and warn of further military action if Tehran does not reach a peace agreement. He suggested a deal may not come until after the US midterm elections in November. Iran has meanwhile signalled willingness to negotiate if Washington reduces military pressure. The confrontation matters to Kenya because instability around the Strait of Hormuz continues to threaten global oil supplies and prices. Brent crude was trading around $100 a barrel on Tuesday.

2. Yemen war worsens as more than 130,000 flee their homes

Veloura

More than 130,000 people have been displaced in Yemen this month as Houthi forces advance against the Saudi-backed government, according to UNHCR. The UN agency warns another 100,000 people could be displaced within three months. More than 3,000 Yemenis have already crossed the Red Sea into Djibouti and Somalia, directly extending the humanitarian consequences into the Horn of Africa.

3. Pressure grows to keep Hormuz and Bab el-Mandeb open as shipping risks rise

Russian President Vladimir Putin and Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman have called for safe passage through both the Strait of Hormuz and Bab el-Mandeb. The two waterways are critical to international oil and merchandise trade. Disruption is particularly relevant to East Africa because prolonged insecurity can increase shipping, insurance and fuel costs.

4. Kenya Power shareholders get bigger dividend after utility turnaround

Kenya Power has increased its dividend by 50%, delivering a significant payout to shareholders following its improved financial performance. Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro, the utility's largest disclosed individual shareholder with about 21.5 million shares, is set to receive roughly Sh32 million in dividends. The bigger story for consumers is whether Kenya Power's financial turnaround will eventually translate into more reliable supply and lower pressure on electricity costs.

5. Kenya's digital economy keeps expanding as internet subscriptions hit 64.3 million

Kenya's mobile internet subscriptions reached 64.3 million by the end of June, representing growth of 9.7% and underscoring how rapidly internet access is expanding. The growth is being driven by mobile connectivity and newer technologies, with important implications for digital media, e-commerce, online government services and the country's broader digital economy.
