Anglican Archbishop Jackson Ole Sapit recently shared a personal story about how one of his sons unexpectedly left their car to join youths protesting against the Finance Bill 2024.
Speaking in Nyahururu on Sunday, Ole Sapit recounted the incident where his son chose to join the anti-finance bill protests instead of staying with him in the car. "I was taken aback on Thursday while I was in Narok, attending to my animals' vaccinations, when we arrived and found young people demonstrating. I had one of my sons in the car," he explained. "He suddenly got out and said, 'I am going to join my peers.'"
The Archbishop shared this anecdote during the Consecration and Enthronement ceremony of Rev. Maj. Samson Mburu Gachathi as the 3rd Bishop of ACK Nyahururu Diocese. The event was attended by President William Ruto, Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, and over 30 MPs.
Archbishop Ole Sapit urged leaders to work collaboratively with all stakeholders to address the challenges facing the country, particularly the concerns raised by the youth. "They are our children, they are in our homes. Let us walk together and seek solutions to the issues affecting Kenyans, because we have the capacity to do so with love," he emphasized.
He also highlighted the importance of avoiding excessive force against protesting youths and called for civility during demonstrations. "I want to emphasize that amidst everything happening, these are children from our families. Let us refrain from using excessive force, and I also urge them not to engage in violence or destruction. Let us remain civil," Sapit urged.
Archbishop Ole Sapit appealed to President Ruto and Kenya's leadership to prioritize listening and engaging in dialogue to resolve contentious issues. "To Your Excellency and the leadership of our nation, this is a moment for discernment. Rather than speaking excessively, let us focus on listening to one another and extending hands of reconciliation. Let us embrace a spirit of listening more than speaking," he concluded.
