Manhunt Underway After 21-Year-Old Woman Is Found Stabbed Eight Times in Umoja

A routine morning visit to work ended in tragedy after a 21-year-old woman was found dead inside her aunt’s apartment in Nairobi’s Umoja Two, with detectives now searching for her boyfriend in connection with the killing.

Fransisca Wanja Thuranira had been staying with her aunt, Agrippina Meme, after a disagreement with her boyfriend. Police and family accounts indicate that the relationship had recently become troubled.

Buruburu detectives have identified the boyfriend as the main suspect and launched a manhunt as they piece together what happened inside the apartment.

According to investigations reported by the Daily Nation, Meme left the house at about 7.30am to go to work. Later that morning, the building caretaker and other residents reportedly saw Wanja enter the apartment with a man believed to be her boyfriend.

By midday, Meme became concerned after she could not reach her niece by phone or text.

She asked a neighbour to check on Wanja.

The neighbour found the front door unlocked and searched the apartment after receiving no response. Wanja was eventually found unresponsive in a bedroom.

Police were called to the scene and detectives began processing the apartment for evidence.

Eight stab wounds

Preliminary investigations established that Wanja had suffered eight stab wounds. A kitchen knife recovered from the scene was taken as evidence, according to reports.

A post-mortem examination conducted at Mama Lucy Teaching and Referral Hospital later confirmed that the injuries caused her death.

Detectives are also examining phone records as they try to establish the events leading to the killing.

The Daily Nation reported that data obtained from a mobile phone provider showed the boyfriend had made several attempts to contact Wanja that morning and that his phone was traced to the apartment before it was switched off.

The apartment reportedly showed no obvious signs of forced entry, another detail detectives are examining as they reconstruct the final moments before Wanja was killed.

Family had raised concerns over relationship

Wanja’s sister, Alice Thuranira, told the Daily Nation that the family knew the couple had fallen out and that Wanja had previously spoken about violent incidents involving her boyfriend.

Alice said she believed the man may have gone to see Wanja following the disagreement.

Those accounts remain part of the investigation and have not been tested in court.

The case highlights the risks that can arise when violence enters intimate relationships. Kenya’s Protection Against Domestic Violence Act recognises physical abuse, threats and other conduct that may endanger a person’s safety or wellbeing as forms of domestic violence.

Under Kenya’s Penal Code, a killing can amount to murder where the prosecution proves that a person unlawfully caused another’s death with malice aforethought.

Police have not publicly announced charges against the man being sought in connection with Wanja’s death.

Her body was taken to the Mama Lucy Kibaki Teaching and Referral Hospital mortuary as detectives continued with the investigation.

The immediate focus is now on locating the suspect, establishing exactly what happened inside the apartment and gathering evidence that can withstand scrutiny in court.
