Mercy Makini breaks silence on Morara Kebaso’s polygamous marriage

Mercy Makini, the former wife of activist and politician Morara Kebaso, has publicly distanced herself from his description of their relationship as part of a polygamous marriage.

Morara recently said he has two wives, naming Mercy as the mother of his three children and identifying another woman, Pauline, as his second wife.

But Mercy says she no longer considers herself part of Morara’s family arrangements.

In a statement shared on Facebook on September 10, she asked Morara to stop referring to her when discussing his relationships.

“As for this talk about polygamy, please stop creating the impression that I am still part of your life. Polygamy is your business, not mine. I left. I moved on. I am living my life,” she said.

Her comments mark a rare public response from Mercy, who said she had largely kept their private affairs away from the public.

Mercy says domestic violence led her to leave

Mercy also gave her account of why the marriage ended.

She said she left the relationship because of domestic violence. She accused Morara of physically assaulting her and said some of the incidents happened while she was pregnant.

“First, I walked away because of DOMESTIC VIOLENCE,” she said.

Mercy said she eventually chose to leave rather than remain in a relationship she considered unsafe.

“Society only appreciates a woman when they walk out of a marriage dead; I chose to walk out alive,” she said.

She said she left Morara’s home on March 2, 2026.

Her allegations are serious and have been presented as her account of the breakdown of the relationship. Morara’s comments cited in the reports do not address the domestic-violence allegations.

Mercy said she had remained silent partly to protect the privacy of the people involved. She suggested that Morara’s recent public comments about their relationship had forced her to speak.

Morara says he has two wives

Morara discussed his family life during a radio interview on September 9.

He said he was not single and described Mercy as his first wife. He said they have three children together.

“I am not single. I have two wives,” Morara said during the interview.

He identified his first wife as Nyanchira, saying she is from Bobasi Constituency in Kisii County. He also named their three children.

Morara then identified Pauline as his second wife.

“I have another wife called Pauline,” he said.

His comments came amid public discussion about his relationship with Pauline and the status of his marriage to Mercy.

Mercy rejects being identified as a wife

Mercy’s response makes clear that she does not want Morara’s description of his family to be taken as an indication that she remains his wife.

She said she had already left the relationship and was now living separately from it.

The disagreement highlights a basic difference in how the two describe their relationship: Morara has publicly referred to Mercy as his first wife, while Mercy says she left the marriage months ago and does not consider herself part of his polygamous arrangement.

For now, the two accounts remain sharply different.

Mercy has also asked that her name no longer be drawn into public discussions about Morara’s relationships, signalling that she wants to separate her current life from the family structure he has described publicly.
