Kitui Senator Enock Kiio Wambua has accused President William Ruto of using government development projects in Ukambani to gain political support ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Speaking in Ukasi, Nguni, in Mwingi Central, Mr Wambua said residents should not be made to feel indebted to the government for projects funded through public money.
He said development was a right of citizens who pay taxes, rather than a political favour.
“The development projects being implemented in Ukambani region right now should not be seen as a favour to the people,” Mr Wambua said.
He also warned against using the projects to build political support for the president ahead of the next election.
“The projects should not be used by Ruto for political mileage. All Kenyans deserve to get government projects because they pay taxes. It is their right,” he said.
Mr Wambua then turned his attention to the 2027 presidential contest, urging residents to support Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka.
He said President Ruto should not threaten to stop development projects because of political disagreements, arguing that a future administration could continue with them.
“You can halt your projects, Kalonzo will finish them for us,” Mr Wambua said.
The remarks place development at the centre of the growing political contest in Ukambani, where Mr Musyoka has continued to position himself as a presidential contender for 2027.
Mr Wambua's comments also reflect a wider political argument over whether government-funded projects should be presented as achievements of individual leaders or as services owed to citizens.
President Ruto has continued to promote his administration's development agenda across the country. His government has faced criticism from opposition leaders who accuse it of using development projects to strengthen its political standing ahead of the 2027 election.
The senator's remarks come as political parties and leaders begin laying the groundwork for the next presidential contest, with alliances expected to take shape in the months ahead.
For now, Mr Wambua is calling on voters in Kitui and the wider Ukambani region to look beyond individual projects when deciding whom to support in 2027.
