Kenya's diaspora is set to play a bigger role in the 2027 presidential election after the electoral commission expanded overseas voter registration to 14 additional countries.
The expansion will take the number of countries covered by diaspora voter registration to 26, widening access for Kenyans living abroad ahead of the August 2027 General Election.
The move could transform diaspora engagement from a largely symbolic part of presidential campaigns into a more significant component of election strategy.
Under Kenya's electoral system, citizens registered outside the country can participate in the presidential election.
The expansion comes as Kenya's diaspora population continues to grow, particularly in countries including the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia and several states in the Middle East.
The United States alone hosts a large Kenyan community and has increasingly become an important destination for politicians seeking support, campaign networks and engagement with Kenyans abroad.
Several political leaders have already stepped up their diaspora activities.
Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, for example, has been holding engagements with Kenyans in the United States as political leaders begin positioning themselves for the 2027 contest.
But expanding registration does not automatically translate into large voter numbers.
IEBC will still have to persuade eligible Kenyans abroad to register and ultimately participate in the election.
Distance from registration and polling centres has historically been one of the obstacles facing diaspora voters.
The commission will also face demands for transparency over the location of registration centres, voter identification and the transmission and declaration of diaspora results.
The political importance of the diaspora extends beyond ballots.
Kenyans living abroad are a major source of remittances, making diaspora policy increasingly important in discussions about investment, taxation, employment and economic development.
Presidential candidates are therefore likely to develop more detailed policies targeting Kenyans overseas.
For the 2027 campaigns, the message is increasingly clear: the political battlefield will extend well beyond Kenya's borders.
