Postponement Pain in Kenya to Goal Glut at Stamford Bridge: Football Weekend Delivers Bangers

From uncertainty surrounding the delayed start of the Kenyan Premier League to a seven-goal thriller at Stamford Bridge, an upset in Naples and a historic shock in Germany, the weekend provided plenty for football fans to savour.

But while Europe's major leagues provided goals and drama, Kenyan football was once again left waiting for clarity.

The 2026/27 FKF Premier League season remains on hold after Football Kenya Federation postponed all Round One matches scheduled for August 31 to September 2. The decision followed renewed consultations with clubs and stakeholders amid an unresolved dispute over promotion and relegation rules.

The dispute centres on competing FKF regulations adopted in 2019 and 2025. Under the 2019 regulations, the bottom two Premier League clubs are automatically relegated, while the third-bottom side enters a promotion-relegation play-off against the third-placed team in the National Super League. The 2025 regulations provide for three automatic relegations and three automatic promotions.

That difference has placed Kariobangi Sharks and Mombasa United at the centre of the dispute. Sharks finished 16th in the Premier League, while Mombasa United finished third in the NSL. Under the 2019 framework, the two sides would meet in a play-off. Under the 2025 regulations, Mombasa United would gain automatic promotion while Sharks would be relegated.

A ruling by Justice Dorah Chepkwony at the High Court in Murang'a allowed FKF to proceed with the league under the 2019 regulations while the wider legal dispute continues. However, that did not bring the matter to an end. FKF initially announced that the league would proceed, before postponing Round One as consultations with clubs and league stakeholders continued.

The cases before the courts could ultimately determine the final composition of the league, including the fate of Sharks and Mombasa United. A hearing at the Milimani Civil Court is scheduled for September 24.

For Kenyan fans, it means another weekend of watching football elsewhere while waiting for their own league to resume.

In England, the Premier League provided a familiar dose of entertainment.

Manchester City began the weekend in style with a 4-1 victory away to Crystal Palace on Friday. Erling Haaland and Rayan Cherki both scored twice as Pep Guardiola's side produced a commanding performance at Selhurst Park.

Liverpool, meanwhile, were held to a 2-2 draw by Nottingham Forest at Anfield. Forest twice took the lead through Dan Ndoye and Morgan Gibbs-White, but Alexander Isak and Víctor Muñoz rescued a point for Andoni Iraola's side.

Tottenham suffered a 2-0 defeat against Newcastle United, while Bournemouth and Everton shared a 1-1 draw at the Vitality Stadium after James Tarkowski struck in stoppage time to deny Bournemouth victory.

At Stamford Bridge, Chelsea produced one of the weekend's most entertaining matches, beating Brighton 4-3.

Roméo Lavia, Pedro Neto, João Pedro and Cole Palmer scored for Chelsea, while Malick Yalcouyé and Pascal Groß found the net for Brighton. João Pedro also scored an own goal as Brighton threatened to complete a remarkable comeback before Chelsea held on.

Manchester United also bounced back in style, beating Ipswich Town 5-2 at Old Trafford. Bruno Fernandes scored a hat-trick as United recovered from an early deficit to secure their first league victory of the campaign.

Leeds United and Brentford drew 1-1, while Sunderland edged Fulham 1-0. Arsenal were due to complete the Premier League weekend with a trip to Aston Villa on Monday night.

In Spain, Real Madrid maintained their perfect start under José Mourinho with a 4-0 victory over newly promoted Málaga at the Santiago Bernabéu. Jude Bellingham, a Málaga own goal, Kylian Mbappé and Arda Güler were on target as Madrid moved to nine points from three matches.

Madrid had earlier beaten Real Sociedad 4-1, with Mbappé scoring a hat-trick and Vinícius Júnior adding another.

Barcelona also continued their strong start, defeating Athletic Club 2-0 at Camp Nou through goals from Raphinha and Fermín López. They were scheduled to face Rayo Vallecano at home on Monday in their third league match.

Atlético Madrid recorded an impressive 3-1 away victory over Sevilla, with Álex Baena scoring twice and Ademola Lookman adding the other goal.

Real Betis, meanwhile, suffered a heavy 5-2 defeat away to Levante.

Germany produced arguably the weekend's biggest shock. Newly promoted SV Elversberg defeated Bayer Leverkusen 3-2 in their first-ever Bundesliga match. Elversberg raced into a 3-0 lead before Leverkusen mounted a late fightback that ultimately fell short.

Bayern Munich opened their title defence with a statement 5-1 victory over VfB Stuttgart, while Borussia Dortmund defeated Hamburg 2-0 despite playing the final stages with 10 men.

Augsburg also began the campaign with a 2-0 victory over newly promoted Schalke 04.

In Italy, Como produced one of the weekend's biggest upsets by beating defending champions Napoli 2-1 at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium. Inter Milan continued their perfect start with a 1-0 victory at Cagliari, while Lazio also won 1-0 away to Genoa.

AC Milan beat Venezia 2-0 at San Siro, while Juventus defeated Parma by the same scoreline to make it two wins from two.

The second round of Serie A was due to conclude on Monday with Roma visiting Lecce and Atalanta hosting Bologna.

In France, Paris Saint-Germain were held to another 2-2 draw, this time away to Lille. PSG conceded twice in stoppage time before rescuing a point through Marquinhos. Strasbourg overturned an early deficit to beat Lens 2-1, while Monaco defeated Marseille 2-0.

For Kenyan football, however, the contrast is stark.

While fans elsewhere debate title races, tactical battles and spectacular goals, Kenyan supporters are still waiting to know when their own league will start and, more fundamentally, which clubs will constitute the competition.

The country's domestic game has enormous potential, but repeated disputes over governance, regulations, promotion and relegation continue to undermine its stability.

The question is no longer simply when the Kenyan Premier League will kick off. It is whether the institutions running the game can provide the certainty, consistency and governance needed to turn that potential into a sustainable professional competition.

Kenya has the players, supporters and commercial opportunity to build a stronger domestic league. But until the recurring boardroom and courtroom battles are resolved, the gap between Kenyan football's potential and its reality will remain painfully visible every weekend.
