Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro is moving to turn his break with President William Ruto’s political camp into a national campaign, positioning himself as a presidential contender while calling for a united opposition ahead of Kenya’s 2027 election.
Nyoro, who now leads the People’s Party of Kenya (PPK), says he will take his message of “national transformation” across the country, focusing on education, healthcare, youth unemployment, economic opportunity and what he describes as greater equality and transparency. Speaking in Murang’a on Sunday, he urged politicians to maintain political maturity and responsible debate as the country moves towards the polls.
His national mobilisation follows a dramatic political break. On 17 August, Nyoro formally announced his departure from the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) and his move into the opposition, ending months of speculation over his political future. He said he had consulted opposition figures before choosing PPK as his political vehicle.
Within days, Nyoro went further, openly presenting himself as willing to seek the presidency in 2027. But he has simultaneously argued that opposition unity must come before individual ambition, saying he would support a single candidate agreed upon by opposition leaders to challenge Ruto. He has also invited other presidential aspirants to PPK-organised rallies, suggesting that his new party could become a platform for a broader opposition coalition rather than simply a personal presidential vehicle.
The shift has rapidly elevated Nyoro from a former Ruto ally to one of the emerging figures in the opposition realignment. His strategy now appears to have two tracks: build PPK into a national political organisation while campaigning for a unified opposition capable of defeating Ruto. The party has already announced the entry of 28 sitting, former and aspiring leaders, adding to speculation that Nyoro is attempting to construct a political machine with reach beyond his Mt Kenya base.
The next test will be whether Nyoro can convert the enthusiasm around his political break into sustained support outside central Kenya. His decision to criss-cross the country, seek a direct mandate from voters and engage competing opposition camps marks the beginning of a much bigger political gamble — one that could reshape both the opposition and the 2027 presidential contest.
What began as a break with Ruto is now becoming a nationwide political project.
