The average price of a gallon of diesel in the United States has risen to $5.85, according to the American Automobile Association, up from $3.71 a year ago and surpassing the peak set after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Diesel fuels most commercial transport, including trucks, buses, trains and construction equipment, meaning the increase hits a broad swathe of the economy.
