ODM Clarifies Youth Leadership Amid Confusion Over McOure’s Role

The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has moved to clear up confusion following a newsletter published at its 20th anniversary event in Mombasa, which listed Kasmuel McOure as Youth League President. The party says that claim is false.

In a statement released on Saturday, ODM reiterated that Johnmark Ketorah remains the rightful Youth League President, urging members to ignore any other assertions.

“The President of the ODM Youth League is Honourable Johnmark Ketorah. Ignore any publication circulating containing misleading information on the same,” the party said.

The controversy stems from a document distributed at the Mombasa ceremony, which named McOure in a role he has never officially held. That prompted questions about the party’s internal communications and leadership structure.

McOure’s Rise — and the Pushback

Kasmuel McOure, a well-known political activist, joined ODM in November 2024. Since then, he has been vocal on youth issues, even representing the party in international forums such as in Brussels.

Others have backed his drive: MCA Robert Alai recently voiced support for McOure in his bid to lead the Youth League.

But McOure’s public prominence has not translated into a formal party post at that level. In fact, the ODM NEC (National Executive Council) formally appointed John's Ketorah in 2016 — and he remains in that role, according to the party.

Wider Implications

Some see the confusion as a reflection of broader tensions in ODM over youth power and influence. McOure has publicly challenged established leaders, particularly on alliances and policy, earning both praise and criticism.

Others, however, warn that such misinformation could undermine party unity — especially as ODM charts its future after years of generational change.

In rejecting the claims, the party has signalled it is committed to clear structures. But for McOure supporters, the episode raises big questions: How much space is there for new voices in ODM, and who really stands at the heart of its youth movement?
