Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i has officially declared his intention to run for the presidency in 2027, saying the country is in urgent need of transformation and leadership that delivers.

Speaking at a packed rally at Gusii Stadium on May 2, 2025, Matiang’i announced his long-awaited decision to enter the presidential race, following what he described as overwhelming calls from Kenyans.

“I am ready to be the President of Kenya,” he declared to loud cheers from the crowd.

Matiang’i, who is currently serving in a senior role at the World Bank, stated that he would soon resign from his international position to return home and begin his campaign in earnest.

“You have asked me to come and serve this country. I will now officially resign, respectfully, and return to serve my country,” he affirmed.

Sources close to Matiang’i indicated that he is expected to leave his World Bank role within the next three weeks to finalize his duties before launching his 2027 campaign full-time.

He acknowledged the many challenges facing the country and expressed confidence in his ability to lead reforms, citing his track record in government.

“Day or night, I have never shied away from work. If entrusted with leadership, I will not let you down,” he said, urging members of the Gusii community to register as voters ahead of the upcoming election.

Encouraging Kenyans not to lose faith in the nation, Matiang’i said, “Kenya has challenges, but we are a resilient people. When the time comes, we will fix this country together.”

His declaration ends months of speculation about his political future and signals a significant realignment in the 2027 presidential race.

Matiang’i's return to Kisii and Nyamira counties was met with massive public support, prompting organizers to relocate his main address from the Kisii Capital Roundabout to the larger Gusii Stadium due to the overwhelming turnout.

Supporters thronged the streets, bringing parts of Kisii town to a standstill as his convoy made its way through Capital-Hospital Road.
