The Ministry of Education has officially announced a major shift in Kenya’s education system—from the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) to Competency-Based Education (CBE). The change aims to simplify learning pathways, enhance accessibility, and align education with real-world demands.

Speaking during the National Conversation Forum on Education held on Thursday, April 24, Education Principal Secretary Dr. Julius Bitok confirmed the transition, stating it as part of an ongoing review and improvement process.

“Curriculum is dynamic, and we have an opportunity to review some aspects. I am happy to note that today marks the official rebranding from CBC to CBE,” said Dr. Bitok.

A Shift Toward Practicality and Inclusivity

The Ministry is currently involving parents and stakeholders in active dialogue about the transition. The goal: to make education more affordable, practical, and tailored to each learner’s strengths and aspirations.

Dr. Bitok urged all players in the education sector to join in shaping policies that reflect the needs of learners today and in the future:

“The future of our children’s education rests squarely on our collective shoulders. I encourage all stakeholders to provide honest feedback and support this vital transformation.”

Key Changes Under CBE

  1. Math Reinvented: Mathematics, once optional under CBC, is now compulsory at the senior school level.

    • Students on the STEM pathway will study pure mathematics.

    • Those in Arts/Sports Science or Social Sciences will study a simplified version.

  2. Learner-Centered Focus: CBE emphasizes a student’s interests, strengths, and practical skills, preparing them for both employment and entrepreneurship.

  3. Teacher Training: Teachers will undergo specialized training to effectively deliver competency-based lessons that are engaging and relevant.

  4. Infrastructure Enhancement: Schools will receive improved facilities, especially in technical, arts, and sports disciplines, ensuring students have access to the tools they need to thrive.

  5. School Categorization:

    • Triple Pathway Schools will offer all three career tracks: STEM, Arts and Sports Science, and Social Sciences.

    • Double Pathway Schools will offer two of the three, typically combining STEM with either Social Sciences or Arts/Sports.

Moving Forward with CBE

While conversations around competency-based education are ongoing, the Ministry remains committed to engaging stakeholders and refining the model. The shift to CBE is designed to create a more flexible, responsive, and future-focused education system for Kenya’s learners.
